Child Abuse Prevention Month
April 1, 12:30 am - April 30, 11:00 pm
Approximately 794,000 children are confirmed by Child Protective Services each year as being abused or neglected. These confirmed cases, however, represent only a fraction of the true magnitude of the problem.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect and encourage individuals and communities to support children and families.
The Blue Ribbon Campaign is a comprehensive effort to promote child abuse awareness. The Blue Ribbon Campaign will not only encourage you to understand the problems of child abuse, but will also guide efforts in what we can do to help. Activities planned for April will include awareness, prevention, and education.
When children are being abused or neglected in their own homes, by the very people that are supposed to protect and nurture them, who will step up for them and advocate for their safety? It is our responsibility as a community to recognize and report child abuse and neglect. If you don’t, who will?
For more information, please contact Gina-Marie Kropiewnicki, Victim Advocate, at 253-4526.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April 1, 12:30 am - April 30, 11:00 pm
Sexual assault is a very serious issue that is both prevalent and traumatic. It’s impact is both immediate and long-lasting. For survivors, it can mean a lifetime of working to regain a life once known before the assault and it can negatively impact the lives of friends and family who care about them. The theme for 2010 is: “Hurts one. Affects all…Preventing sexual assault is everyone’s duty.”
Sexual assault involves sexual acts that are forced upon individuals against their will. These acts can be physical (such as rape or unwanted sexual touching), verbal (such as sexually abusive or threatening speech), or psychological (such as voyeurism or exhibitionism). Anyone can be a victim of sexual assault. Sexual assault is most often committed by someone known to the victim such as a spouse, family member, co-worker, friend or acquaintance, although it can also be committed by a stranger.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence such as, sexual assault and rape, and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. During this month, sexual violence prevention advocates will promote activities to raise awareness of sexual assault and how to help prevention.
